HIGHLIGHTS

Population Association of Singapore (PAS) hosted her inaugural Annual Meeting on 11-12 May 2023 at the National University of Singapore. Co-organised with NUS’ Centre for Family and Population Research, the conference was graced by Minister Indranee Rajah, Minister in the Prime Minister's Office, Second Minister for Finance, as well as Second Minister for National Development and Leader of the House as Guest-of-Honour. Distinguished guests Dr Reiko Hayashi, President of the Asian Population Association, and Mr Ho Kwon Ping, Founder and Executive Chairman of Banyan Tree Holdings, were our keynote speakers for the special event.

Over 140 presenters and participants attended the two-day conference, with over 90 papers presented on fertility, marriage, family changes, children and youth, aging, education, labor market, and more. Participants also had the opportunity to connect with each other at the conference’s networking dinner.

The conference also organised a plenary session on Employment Resiliency of Older Adults in Singapore, and a symposium by the Tsao Foundation — Community-Based Approach for Successful Aging.

With many young scholars and students interested in population studies, PAS also held a best student paper competition, with the winner announced at the conference.

Building Singapore’s Population Towards a Better Future

Welcome to the inaugural in-person PAS 2023 Annual Meeting! This conference is organised in collaboration with the National University of Singapore (NUS)’s Centre for Family and Population Research (CFPR), and is held physically in Singapore!

Established in 2021, the Population Association of Singapore (PAS) aims to promote the scientific study of the population, encourage exchange between researchers, and stimulate interest in population issues in Singapore and Asia. This year’s annual conference focuses on the following themes:

Ms. Indranee Rajah, Minister in the Prime Minister's Office, Second Minister for Finance since 2018, as well as Second Minister for National Development and Leader of the House since 2020. In the Prime Minister's Office, Ms Rajah oversees the National Population and Talent Division and assists Senior Minister Teo Chee Hean on population matters.

Ms Rajah has been the Member of Parliament for the Tanjong Pagar Group Representation Constituency (GRC) since 2001. She was in practice as a lawyer and Senior Counsel before joining the Government.

Dr Reiko Hayashi

President, Asian Population Association

Deputy Director-General

National Institute of Population and Social Security Research (IPSS), Japan

Dr Reiko Hayashi is Deputy Director-General of Japan’s National Institute of Population and Social Security Research (IPSS). Prior to joining IPSS in 2012, she served in Senegal as JICA technical advisor to the Minister of Health (2008–2011), and was engaged in projects concerning population, health and development in various countries. Her research covers global population ageing, health and longevity, internal and international migration, and population development.

She holds a PhD in policy studies from the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS), Japan. She is the President of Asian Population Association (2022-2024), a member of ICD and ICF Commissions of Social Security Council of Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, and of Japan’s delegation to the Commission on Population and Development, United Nations.

Mr Ho Kwon Ping is the Founder and Executive Chairman of Banyan Tree Holdings and Laguna Resorts and Hotels, and Executive Chairman of Thai Wah Public Company. He was also the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Singapore Management University. Educated in Tunghai University, Taiwan; Stanford University, California and the University of Singapore, he was the Economics Editor of the Far Eastern Economic Review in Hong Kong before joining the Thai Wah family business and then starting his own companies.

For his services to the country, Mr Ho has been decorated with the Meritorious Service Medal and the Distinguished Service Order by the Singapore Government. He has also been conferred honorary doctorates by Johnson & Wales University and from Hong Kong Poly University.
