Highlights
The Population Association of Singapore (PAS), supported by the Master of Science in Applied Gerontology and the Centre for the Study of Social Inequality at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), hosted its 3rd Annual Meeting on 15-16 May 2025. The event was centered around the theme, "Demography and Inequality: Intersecting Paths".
The conference showcased prominent keynote speakers, including Associate Professor Teo You Yenn, Provost’s Chair in Sociology at NTU, and Professor Sarah Burgard, Professor of Sociology, Epidemiology and Public Policy, and who also serves as Director and Research Professor at the Population Studies Center at the University of Michigan.
Spanning two days, the conference gathered more than 150 leading population scholars, community organizations, industry professionals, and policymakers. It served as a dynamic platform for intellectual exchange, the sharing of innovative ideas, and robust networking. With over 100 presentations covering topics such as caregiving, inequality, aging, fertility, health, marriage, and family dynamics, attendees benefited from rich discussions and interactive sessions, learning from one another’s expertise.
PAS’s partner, the Tsao Foundation, also organized a panel discussion—The Intersections between Gender, Ageing and Inequality—which brought together leaders from AWARE, Singapore Council of Women's Organisations, and PPIS. The panel explored how the intersection of gender and age across the life course contributes to the gendered inequalities experienced by women in later life. Key highlights from these presentations are summarized in the link below.
To celebrate the achievements of students and early-career researchers in the field of population studies, the Best Student Paper Award and the Early Career Award were presented during the PAS Annual General Meeting, held as part of the conference program.
Demography and Inequality: Intersecting Paths
Conference Theme:
The theme of the 2025 conference, "Demography and Inequality: Intersecting Paths," highlights the significant and complex influence that inequality exerts on demographic trends. The distribution of resources, opportunities, and power—marked by profound disparities—shapes demographic patterns in ways that both mirror and perpetuate social inequities. These influences are evident in the evolving dynamics of marriage, family formation, health outcomes, migration patterns, and fertility decisions. As these demographic trends develop, they not only reflect social inequalities but also play a role in either reinforcing or mitigating them, creating a reciprocal relationship. The interaction between demographic factors and social inequalities, economic disparities, and political polarisation presents challenges that vary widely across different regions and social groups, necessitating careful, context-specific studies. This conference aims to deepen our understanding of how demographic trends are shaped by and, in turn, influence inequality. We encourage scholars to submit abstracts that explore key questions about the relationships between various forms of inequality, inequity, disparity, and demographic events, processes, and outcomes using quantitative, qualitative, or mixed-method approaches. Comparative studies across countries and regions are also welcome. This conference aims to foster a dialogue that envisions pathways towards a more equitable future.
